Of course, most of my creative ideas are educational in nature.  We have Arduino's, Legos, MindStorms, and a full electronics lab. The kids re all familiar with Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.  They each built their own, sub $300 computers from scratch as well.  

This calculator project seems like a fun way to get the Arduino programs ("sketches") controlling real-world objects.
